Ingress Protection (IP Codes)

First Numeral covers protection of persons against solid objects (BS EN60529)

Second Numeral covers resistance to ingress of water

  1. Vertical dripping (e.g. Condensation)
  2. Dripping from direct sprays 15d from vertical
  3. Spraying from direct sprays of water up 60d from vertical
  4. Splashing from water in all directions
  5. Jetting from low pressure jets from all directions
  6. Powerful jetting protection
  7. Temporary immersion
  8. Continuous immersion

Examples

  • Exterior coach lanterns could be IP23 or IP24
  • Security lighting could be IP33 or IP44
  • Shower downlights could be IP44 or IP65
  • Pond submersible spots  IP68

Bathroom and Shower Cubicle Zone restrictions for IP ratings (Waterproofing)

Zone 0.  The interior of the bath or shower cubicle. Only SELV (Low Voltage 12V. AC. Transformers must be sited outside Zones 0,1,2. IP rating must be at IPx7 or above.
Zone 1. The area immediately above bath or shower cubicle. IP rating needed of at least IPx4.
Where water jets are likely to be used for cleaning purposes in communal baths & showers at least IPx5 is required
Zone 2.  Within 0.6m (24”) of the outside edge of the bath or shower.  IP rating needed of at least IPx4.
Where water jets are likely to be used for cleaning purposes in communal baths & showers at least IPx5 is required
Zone 3.  Anywhere outside to 2.4m (8ft) of other zones.  No specific IP rating unless where water jets are likely to be used for cleaning purposes in communal baths & showers at least IPx5 is required. Condensation or Steam ingress must also be considered in this zone, though not part of the regulations.
